Life often times comes at you with hard to make decisions.
When these forks-in-the-road events happen you might ask yourself:
- Does it even matter if I make this decision?
- What will I gain?
- Is it safer to not make a decision?
- Am I really missing out on that much?
And countless other questions.
Maybe a personal experience with a little reflection can help you as you weigh your options.
A personal story
Growing up we owned a boat and for the most part, I enjoyed having one. I loved sailing, getting to see new places, Swimming, and being able to fish whenever I wanted. But, as with most things, there were several things that I disliked.
Storms out in the open waters
Cleaning barnacles off the bottom of the boat
untangling ropes from the propeller
The whole “rope in the propeller” thing is what frustrated me the most. You’d think we would have learned to organize the ropes on our boat after the first few times they fell off. But stubbornness seems to run deep in our blood.
So, because of our lack of organization we usually had something fall off our boat. Luckily for us, one end was usually tied so we rarely lost one. Yet, the bigger problem was that the rope would make its way to the back and wrap around the propeller.
Which wasn’t a big deal to untangle when we were to close to land or in shallow water. But on one occasion it happened off the gulf of Mexico. And I’m not talking close to the beach, not even close. We couldn’t even see land from where we were.
So as order of command went, the youngest (me) got the honor to untangle it. There I went a brave 9-year-old boy with only a knife diving into the deep blue. Which seemed to drop a degree in temperature the closer I got to the bottom of the boat.
Thinking back, all the parts seem to fit just right for a Jaws movie (in the middle of nowhere and the stupid rope won’t come loose!). In my frustration, I decided to look around and take in the view. I can still see the endless depth of blue that turned black the deeper it went.
I saw it…… A great white headed straight for me!
Luckily I had a knife. I threw it and managed to buy myself enough time to get out of the water!
Although, I did hear the music to the Jaws movie! This theme song scared me so bad that I swam as quick as I could and handed my dad my resignation letter.
Thinking back, the depths of water bring to mind endless opportunities locked away in the ocean.
The depths of water and opportunity
Based on previous experience, I will never be one of those who embarks on one of those adventures! But those who have dared to go deeper have been able to experience things that only a select few ever will.
The new landscape, unique types of fish, sunken ships that have years of history locked away and so much more that only those who choose to go into the deep of the water will get to enjoy.
Think about it, earth is made up of majority water! Those who dare could spend a lifetime and only scratch the surface.
Maybe, you are looking at what seems like endless opportunities. But the jaws theme in your head is giving you the urge to swim away scared?
I want to encourage you to step out in faith.
Mute the noise in your head that reminds you of your failures, inadequacies, fears, and obstacles.
There’s a depth of adventure you will never experience unless you let go of what you think is safe. Embrace by faith what God has planned for you.
Remember you walk by Faith, not alone
He has a plan for you
Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
God has a plan for those who have trusted Him as their savior. If God has a plan, it’s because He intends to see it through.
He will give you wisdom
James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.
God wants to give you what you need. And that includes the wisdom to do what He has planned for you.
- In scriptures
- Through prayer
- From people wiser then you
God has made wisdom available. And He isn’t stingy with it. He gives it generously.
Too often we just don’t ask or seek after it.
He will give you peace
Phillipians 4: 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
It’s hard to make a decision when you can’t even think straight because of stress and fears. When you bring all those fears and anxiety to God He will give you a peace that is beyond human understanding.
He will give you His presence
Matthew 28:20 …And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
And the best part of it all is that God calls us to walk in Faith, not alone. He promised that he would never leave us or forsake us.
God never fails on His promises.
So jump into the depths of opportunity in front of you knowing that God is with you.
Are you seeking God for wisdom in your decisions?
Have you forgotten that God is with you always?
What anxieties and fears do you need to lay at His feet?
