How do you know if you’re going with the flow or against it?
“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil
is for good men to do nothing.”
― Edmund Burke
In Luke 6:20-26 Jesus mentions how people will hate, exclude, reject and insult Christ followers because of what they believe. Jesus knew this because He understood that His message was one that would bring dissension. In contrast Jesus flips the coin and mentions the possibility that you might be received well by everyone. He then explains that if everyone is receiving you well it might be that you are going with the flow. As many of us know, not many people like to be told those hard truths that cause us to look at our world-view and lifestyle, but everyone loves a false prophet who will tell them what they want to hear. Everyone loves someone who would rather please the crowd with lies than someone who will love them with the truth.
Now, I know there is an extreme that can be taken here as well. You probably seen it. It’s the one where someone walks around with the intention to offend everyone just because it is the truth. The problem is this is not the example that Jesus gave.
Jesus loved everyone, even those who hated and rejected Him. And in that love Jesus offered them truth. A truth that brought Him persecution and eventually death. It wasn’t His approach and demeanor that brought Him persecution, but His message. Again, the same message that He calls us to share.
So if we do a self-check on our life, will we find a please everyone – suppress the truth kind-of life? Or a life that speaks the truth in Love. In other words, a life that goes against the flow.
If you find that you are the go with the flow kind of person, consider these thoughts
- Remember that your message the hope for the world
- Remind yourself that the message of Jesus is GOOD news
- Jesus is worth it and He gave it all for us. So I believe naturally we should do the same for Him
- At least in the US, any negative response is probably not going to be that bad
- You’ll find that obedience to God brings you more satisfaction then anything you could gain on earth
So….go for it! Stand out – Don’t blend in and just be normal – Take a stand. Follow God’s calling on your life.
“Nobody made a greater mistake than he
who did nothing because he could do only a little.”
― Edmund Burke
