God doesn’t want you to be happy……
wait for it…….
well the truth is God does want you to be happy, just not apart from him. And the reality is that you and I will never be truly happy apart from Him. Only in Him is where true everlasting joy is found. Scripture says it this way:
Psalm 16:11 (ESV)
You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
You might think, I’ve never been happier then I am right now. And I would say that I agree with that statement. But I would also follow with a question:
Think back to a time when you were extremely happy, happier then you’ve ever been.
How long did the happiness you felt in that moment last?
You see God knows that anything we’re depending on for happiness outside of him will eventually fade away.
Think about all the things that we’ve experienced this with:
- Youth – We get old
- Beauty – Fades away
- Health – We get sick momentarily or permanently
- Strength – We grow weak
- Wealth – Loses value, depletes, gets stolen or lost
- People – They leave, betray us or die
Scripture tells us, Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
The surest place to find joy, and not just joy, but everlasting joy, is in God the Father. In Him you can enjoy youth, beauty, health, strength, wealth and relationships, which, by the way, are things He created, knowing that even when they fade away you will still have joy and contentment, because your joy was not dependent upon those things to begin with. Instead it is dependent on God. And He said He would, “never leave us or forsake us”.
So God doesn’t want you to be happy apart from Him. Because only in Him there is true happiness, joy and contentment forever.
