Have you ever met someone who set out to be second best?
My guess is that most people want to be the best. Which means they get first place.
That’s the essence of competition – to win.
First place, not second.
It could be anything from backyard basketball to a full-blown tournament. You want to win so bad you can taste it.
The desire to win
Personally, I’m pretty competitive.
And just as much as I like to win, I hate to lose. Even if it’s a simple board game against my kids. (Don’t judge. We all have our faults.)
The desire to win, to be first is in all of us.
This is why we do most of what we do. Often it’s hard to notice because we disguise with catchy phrases like, getting ahead, moving up the corporate ladder, the american dream, or chasing a dream.
We work long hours to get that executive position, hit the gym six or seven days a week to be in better shape, buy the clothes, cars, houses, or toys based on how we want to be perceived.
It’s all about a mindset of being first. So many people are playing the game of life and their goal is to win, be first and above everyone else.
Pick me instead of them
Jesus saw this in his disciples and that’s why he had to make this statement in Matthew 20:16, 26-27 “So the last will be first, and the first last… It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave”.
Why would Jesus say this?
Think about it.
Even those who were walking, eating, and spending everyday with Jesus were struggling with wanting to be promoted above others – in other words, they wanted to be first.

Fighting for last place
The Holy spirit will work on your pride issues. And it will be a continuous process until you get to heaven.
In those moments of struggle, ego-centrism, and self-gratification you have to remember that it’s not about you.
You need to look beyond yourself and remember that people matter to God and the only way you are going to be effective for God’s kingdom is if you rearrange your priorities – Love God and love other.

You are not first. No matter how hard you try. No matter how badly you want it. That is not your place.
And against all human reasoning, this is the best place for you.
You are most content when you are submitting to God and serving others.

The struggle is real
It’s a struggle.
But it’s a blessed struggle.
It’s a struggle for God’s kingdom over mine.
Against all you earthly desire, you actually do want to be second because you love God and his Glory.
