How Jesus is Making the World a Better Place

Some might not agree with this statement because they have seen or experienced how religion can be destructive. They have seen how people following a religion can kill and do evil things in the name of their religion. And I agree.

Religion can be destructive.

But I’m not talking about religion. I talking about a relationship with Jesus. The Jesus I’m talking about healed those who needed healing, fed those who were hungry, became friends with those who were outcasts and a defended the weak. That’s who I follow. That’s the Jesus I want to be more like. And it’s not a cold rigid religion. It’s a daily walk with someone who loves me and is leading me to the all-encompassing source of beauty, joy, and goodness – God himself.

So think about it. How would the world be if people followed the Jesus I’m talking about?

Well, there are. There are people all over the world living for Jesus. They are giving their lives in extraordinary and radical ways because they love him and he is transforming them to live how heglasses-1 glasses-2 lived. The places where these people live and visit are being transformed into better places. Here is just one example. CBWM  is an organization through which people who love Jesus are able to express that love to those in need. Through the work of the organization and the love of all those who donated resources, time and money hundreds of people in Honduras C.A. were able to see clearly for the first time. Hundreds of people were given glasses that they probably would have never been able to afford. This little town, in what seems to be the middle of nowhere, is better because of Jesus. Because of people transformed by Jesus in such a way that they are willing to sacrifice time and money so that others can be blessed. And not just physically but spiritually as well.

So how does this happen? How do people get to this place? Well, this is the beauty of a relationship opposed to a religion. As we walk with Jesus he puts his love in our hearts and flips our me-centered views to a God and other-centered view. Jesus expressed it this way in Matthew 22:

And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
This is the great and first commandment.  And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

It’s not that complicated really. People who are more focused on themselves will always choose what is best for the good of “me and mine”. But people who obey Christ by Loving God and loving others will do things that benefit others without any direct benefit to themselves. In essence, Jesus rubs off on us as we spend time with him. And the more we become like Jesus the more we start to act like Jesus. In turn, the world becomes a better place through Jesus’ work in the world through us.
