Who’s the stubborn donkey?
This might seem a little random at first, but it comes from the story of Balaam and his donkey in Numbers chapter 22.
Balaam takes off on a trip in disobedience to God and something curious begins to happen, Balaam’s donkey begins to veer off from the road. The donkey actually does this two times and then eventually lays down!
Feeling that the donkey’s actions are making him look like a fool, Balaam beats his donkey every time it goes off course and then gives it an even bigger beating when it lays down. And this is where the craziest thing happens. The donkey talks.
No, this is not an excerpt from Shrek. This really happened. Here is the dialogue:
Here is the dialogue between Balaam and donkey:
28 Then the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth, and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?” 29 Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made a fool of me! If only I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.” 30 The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?” “No,” he said. 31 Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with his sword drawn. So he bowed low and fell facedown.
So Balaam, just got out-smarted by a donkey. Probably not the story you want to go home and tell your friends.
A little irony
Can you see the irony in this story? I think it just shows God’s humor.
God uses the animal that most people view as a representation of stubbornness to show Balaam his stubbornness.
Hopefully, we are not so stubborn that God has to talk to us through a donkey.

How to outsmart a donkey?[spacer height=”20px”]
Is God asking you to do something? Do you know you are not in God’s will? Do you feel like something is telling you that you are being disobedient to God?
You should listen! Don’t let a donkey out-smart you! I know there are many times when it seems that God’s will is kind of fuzzy, but there are times when His will is almost like a direct voice from God (like in Balaam’s example). We need to remember that God sets boundaries, many times in the form of commandments, in our life for our good. God puts things in our life , like a donkey, to veer us off of our path of disobedience.
