Gospel For Your Pity Party

pitHave you ever thrown yourself a party?
And I’m not talking about just any kind of party.
I’m talking about a pity party.
It’s when you throw a party to celebrate how bad you’ve got it.
The theme is poor me and no one understands what I’m going through.
My guess would be that this type of themed party is universal. Some just tend to celebrate it more often, for a little longer or never even leave the party.
Even though they are universal and everyone is guilty of throwing one of these for themselves, they can be harmful.

The danger in pity parties

Satan wants you to stall because you are feeling sorry for yourself.
He would rather you spend your day moping around complaining about how bad you have instead of seeing the glories God has laid out for the day.
Your enemy, the devil, would rather you be blinded to the goodness of God by the shadows cast by the clouds of your circumstance.
“Yes, you do have it bad”, he will tell you. The lies will continue, “Probably worse than anyone else”. And above all, he will try to convince you that God doesn’t love or care about you.
If left unchecked, pity parties can turn into hangovers where we lay there and shake our fists at God. Accusing Him of not caring and abandoning you.
But there is a gospel message for you and the rest of the party guests.

Wedding Crasher

Jesus wants to crash your pity party. He wants to crash it before you make a mistake and ask “despair” to marry you.

And not only does He want to crash it, He wants to change the theme.

He wants to change the theme to one of thankfulness

Psalm 118:24 This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.

God has this day just like He has made every day since He created the world. He didn’t make because you deserved it, He made because He is good.

Not only did He make this day, He went all out.

He added color, smells and changes in temperature. It might feel the same as yesterday. But it’s not. It’s a brand new, different then yesterday Day.

Today is a gift from God. So rejoice in it.

He wants to change the theme to one of joy

Psalm 30:11 You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy,

There is a time for everything. A time for mourning and a time for rejoicing.

But I believe that we as Christians should joyful even in sorrow. Mourning is appropriate for funerals. But we celebrate a risen savior.

Your mourning will turn to joyful dancing as you remind yourself that Jesus is not dead. He rose from the grave and is alive with God in heaven.

This will probably not change your current circumstance. But it can help the way you respond to it.

This is not the end of your story. Jesus has a purpose for you and He proved that when He rose from the grave to make a way for all who believe to have eternal life with Him.

He wants to change the theme to one of singing

Psalm 40:3 He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the Lord.

Have you ever heard someone humming a song and then that song gets stuck in your head for the rest of the day? Unfortunately, sometimes it’s a song we don’t want to get stuck in our head.

Christians should have a song stuck in their head.

The song is sin and death can no longer control me. The greatest weapon that Satan has is death and God has surrendered it powerless against those who trust in Him as their savior.

It’s a new song. Not the old one of defeat and hopelessness.

It’s a new song of victory. Filled with notes and lyrics of a future and a hope.

The Gospel in your pity party

Your pity party says, you can’t. You’re not enough. And you’ve got to bad to even try.

The Gospel says He can and you can through His power.

Jesus didn’t die on a cross for you to live in defeat. Even if you do have it worse then others, Jesus is still on the throne, He still has a purpose for you, He promised to never leave you or forsake you and He is coming back soon.

Soul Check:

Is your pity party keeping you from doing what God has called you to do?

Are you letting Jesus crash your pity party?

Is Satan winning the battle in those moments of weakness?
