When You Have Nothing To Lose

How do people live when they have nothing to lose?

I believe people who have nothing to lose give themselves completely to whatever it is they want to pursue.

Obviously, this can be a good thing or a bad thing.

Those who have evil intentions wreak havoc, while those who have a desire to bless others do some amazing things.

The apostle Paul is an example of someone who did some amazing things. This is how he said it in Philippians 1:21, “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” In other words – I ain’t got nothin to lose.

I believe it was because of this mentality that Paul was able to write so many books of the new testament, suffer so much, endure so much, and finally, make every effort to go to a place where he knew he would lose his life. And now we are so indebted to Paul for so much of the rich writing that he left behind. Writing that is full of statements, prayers, convictions, commands and desires rooted in a close walk with Jesus.

For Paul having nothing to lose in this world meant having everything to gain in Jesus.

Now let’s think about the opposite of this. Having everything to gain in this world means having everything to lose to Jesus.

And Paul was just following the example of his lord Jesus. Here’s Jesus statement in Matthew 8:20 about how he lived; Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.

I wonder if this is why so many of us struggle to do something for Christ? Is it possible that we have too much to gain in this world that we can’t step out in faith because we are afraid of losing it?

Personally, I want to be like Paul and Jesus.

I have experienced that it’s not easy seeking to live this way because when you look around at what others view as success it can easily draw you in. But when I set my sight back on Jesus it all makes sense again. This is how the author of Hebrews said it in Hebrews 12:1-2,

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

The only way we can live as if we have nothing to lose is by keeping our eyes on Jesus. Do you want to live with complete abandon? Keep your eyes on Jesus. Do you want to be like so many that left amazing legacies because of their selflessness? Keep your eyes on Jesus.

It’s not just about having nothing to lose. It’s more about having everything to gain in Jesus.
