How’s your Love life?
I think this is a good question to ask during February because it is something on everyone’s mind. But unfortunately for some, the love life that I’m talking about here is not one of intimacy between two people. Instead, it’s about the life of love that we are displaying throughout our life. Read 1 John 4 below:
7 let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 19 We love because he first loved us. 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.
This passage raises 3 questions about our life of love.
Question #1: Am I loving in such a way that says I am God’s?
The passage says that whoever loves is born of God. In others words, loving has to do with Identity. Being born of God means that God will begin to make me like Him. To be like God means I love like him. And to not love Like Him brings up the question of whether I am truly His.
Question #2: Am I loving in such a way that says I am Loved by God?
The only reason that we’re even able to love is because God loved us first. But if we’re not displaying a life of love, the question might be, have I really received God’s love! Receiving God’s love teaches us what true love looks like.
Question #3: Am I loving in such a way that says I Love God?
The evidence that I love God is that I love others. Another way to say this is that what I do on the outside show what’s on the inside. Love for God on the inside has no other option than to flow out in love for His creation.(Prov. 14:31
) The passage clearly tells us that, if we hate someone, but say with love God we are telling a big fat lie!
