Why Being Lazy Is Crazy

Matthew 25:24-28 24 “Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’ 26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest. 28 “‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags.

Lazy is not a valid excuse

The master understands that none of the excuses the servant gave are the real reason for the lack of return. It was laziness. In verse 27 he also says that he could have at least put the money in the bank so that it could gain interest. This servant was lazy and just didn’t care and the master could see it. The master might have said it this way, a little personal interest would have got you some bank interest.

The crazy thing about this is that the servant spent a lot of energy burying the treasure. If only he would have redirected that energy taking the money to the bank, the master would have acknowledged an effort on the servant’s part. Especially since we, because we can see the bigger picture, know that the master was measuring faithfulness, not the amount of the return.

Why being lazy is crazy

Being lazy when it comes to investing in God’s kingdom is crazy because we are missing out on so many opportunities. We miss out on opportunities to impact lives and point them to Jesus. Laziness causes us to see everything as too hard or impossible to do, it makes us work harder at avoiding work than actually doing the work, and it makes God seem harsh because He is asking “too much” from us.

God has a great purpose for our lives and the devil will use anything he can to keep us from fulfilling it, even laziness. Don’t let laziness get in the way of accomplishing all that God has for you.

Start being intentional

Your life doesn’t have to be meaningless. You have been given the opportunity of a lifetime. The talents, skills, family, friends, job, etc that you have been given and placed in the middle of, were meant to be maximized for God’s glory. Start putting a little effort in being intentional and try to find ways to maximize what God has entrusted you with. Start being intentional in identifying those areas you struggle with laziness because these might be areas where God is trying to use you.

Here are some questions to  ask when struggling with laziness that will help you change your perspective and get you motivated:

  • What if by staying in my comfort zone I am missing out on unimaginable possibilities?
  • What would happen if I put all these gifts back into God’s hands and trusted Him for the results?
  • Maybe the scariest thought is, what would happen if I “hide” all these gifts because of laziness?

Don’t be lazy. Lazy is crazy because it can cause you to miss out on the most amazing and fulfilling life that God has planned for you.
