In Luke 12 Jesus shares a story about a farmer who is having a really good year. The harvest is producing so much he doesn’t even know what to do with it. He’s gathering so much that he begins making plans to sit back and relax and enjoy the ride. He has so much he doesn’t even have room for it. So the farmer begins to make plans to build a bigger barn.
Reading this, most of us wouldn’t think there is anything evil or sinful going on. But as Jesus always does, He looks to the heart and finds something displeasing to God – Greed. Yes, this farmer is rich but rich only for himself.
What Jesus goes on to share should be a wakeup call for all of us.
Luke 12:20 (NIV) “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
Are you being foolish? What are you, like the farmer, storing up that God would say you fool? When God calls your spirit home what will be the words that follow – fool or wise?
This warning should be a wake-up call for all of us because Jesus goes on to say that, “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
So how can you and I be rich wise? By being rich towards God. And lucky for us, Jesus gives us some guidelines in the following verses.
- vv. 22, 25-26 Don’t worry about your life because you can’t add another second to it anyways. God is the giver of life.
- vv. 22, 24, 29-30 Don’t worry what you will eat. God feeds the birds and you are more important than the birds.
- vv. 22, 27-28 Don’t worry about what you will wear. God clothes the grass of the fields and you are more important than flowers.
- vv. 31 Seek His kingdom.
- vv. 33-4 Sell your things and give to the poor. Make sure you invest in heaven so your heart is there also.
What does all this have to do with being rich towards God?
God isn’t concerned with money or things. He created everything and has no need for anything. What God wants is a life well spent for His glory. Think of your life as currency – you will either spend it on you or God.
Why you need to get rich now
You need to get rich towards God now! This needs your immediate attention. Tomorrow is not promised to anyone. God told the farmer, “‘tonight’ your life will be demanded from you.”
If you’re not being rich for God you’re being rich for yourself.
If you’re not investing your life for God, you’re wasting it on yourself.
