God + nothing = enough

The pursuit of more than God

If you were to boil your pursuit of God what would it be?

  • God and safety
  • God and status
  • God and comfort
  • God and provision
  • God and success
  • God and a spouse
  • God and eternal life

Sadly, I believe many of us seek after God because of what we think we can get. We accept God because we believe once we do our life will be peaceful and safe until we die. Or we accept God because we believe once we do all our needs will be met and we can live comfortably for the rest of our lives. Some have accepted God because they need an answer to the pray for a spouse or some other need.

Regardless of what it is is, it’s a pursuit of God and something else.

God + nothing = enough

Unfortunately, this pursuit will never lead you to the rich deep relationship that your heart desires.

This is why Jesus said,

No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money”. Matthew 6:24 (ESV)

and another powerful statement,

“you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” Mark 12:30 (ESV)

As long as you’re pursuing God and something else your heart will be divided. The rightful owner of your heart is God. Quit giving it away to something or someone else.

This pursuit of God and something else is an evil dis-trust of God. We seek God-plus-something because deep-down we fear He won’t be enough.

Just think how vain that pursuit is. If God is all that He says He is then everything is ultimately found in Him.

God knows you and cares

Oddly enough, when you get your priorities correct in your pursuing, God wants you to enjoy other things.

Matthew 6:33 (ESV) But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Psalm 37:4 (ESV) Delight yourself in the Lordand he will give you the desires of your heart.

Stop pursuing God and something or someone else. Give God your all and then trust Him for everything else.
