God is waiting for you to pick a side
Walk on road, hmmm?
Walk left side, safe. Walk right side, safe.
Walk middle, sooner or later get squish just like grape.
Here, karate, same thing.
Either you karate do “yes” or karate do “no.”
You karate do “guess so,” squish just like grape. Understand?
– Miyagi: character in the movie Karate Kid
I love this quote from the karate kid. It’s a lesson about indecisiveness. My paraphrase: You have to pick a side and give it all you got. Half-heartedness leads to squished grapes.
Being a Christian requires all of your heart. You can’t follow Jesus with a halfhearted devotion. One foot after Jesus and one foot after your own desires will only lead to squished Christian.
God does care about this. He wants you to make a choice. Don’t call yourself a Christian and give God the leftovers. Don’t give away all your passion to everything else and then give God the fumes.
Revelation 3:15-16 (NIV) I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
Don’t be satisfied with a mediocre relationship with Jesus. Having one foot on the path to follow Jesus and one foot on the path following your desires leads away from God because to not follow God wholeheartedly is to not follow Him at all.
God’s says “I wish” you would make a decision because He doesn’t want you to be fooled into thinking you are headed in the right direction all of your life only to find out in the end that you were just playing the part (Matthew 7:21-23).
Indecision is a bad decision.
1 John 2:15-17 (ESV) Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
You can’t just abnegate responsibility for your life to chance. you have to give all you’ve got.
Jesus asks us to act. He says, love, which implies that you have to act. You do this by pursuing God. You do whatever it takes by the power of the Holy Spirit to make God the center of all your life. Not just a word or phrase you throw around in front of your Christian friends.
God is very clear through His word that He wants you to make a decision. This is not one of those areas of life where you can stratal the fence.
You must pick a side.
You must choose
I love this almost climactic speech that Joshua gives the people of Israel. I can almost hear the music building up in the background as he calls out the nation to make a decision.
Notice he doesn’t leave them with the option to be complacent or not make a decision. He says choose.
Joshua 24:14-15(MSG) “So now: Fear God. Worship him in total commitment. Get rid of the gods your ancestors worshiped on the far side of The River (the Euphrates) and in Egypt. You, worship God.
“If you decide that it’s a bad thing to worship God, then choose a god you’d rather serve—and do it today. Choose one of the gods your ancestors worshiped from the country beyond The River, or one of the gods of the Amorites, on whose land you’re now living. As for me and my family, we’ll worship God.” (emphasis mine)
God is giving you the same speech today. He is calling out, choose this day who you will serve.
