Faithfulness and Faithlessness
Hebrews 11:6 (NIV) And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
This verse makes a pretty strong statement. It says that it is impossible to please God without faith. Which for a Christian should set off some mental and spiritual alarms. Hopefully, we want to please God and want to know how to do that.
If this is true of you, and I hope it is, then this verse should make you stop in your tracks and read a little slower.
Faith is not an option. If Faithlessness equals not pleasing God then the opposite is true as well – Faithfulness pleases God. That’s a pretty big deal.
But what exactly is faith?
Faith is about focus
Hebrews 11:1 (KJV) Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
The writer of Hebrews gives us a pretty clear picture of what faith is. Faith is a redirecting of your focus. The focus goes from you to God.
Faith is built on hope. A belief of what is, even when you can’t see it with your physical eyes. Things that don’t make sense in the present can be put together as time goes by like a well-planned puzzle. What didn’t seem to fit in your life or seem to hit you out of nowhere, looking back seems like the only way it was meant to be.
Faith is about God. That is the only place to find real lasting hope. Nowhere else can you find hope everlasting. Anything you put your faith in other than God will one day let you down.
Faith is pleasing to God because it reorients your focus back to where it was always meant to be – on Him. Sin distorted your vision. It caused you to question the solid rock you were meant to build your life on and instead convinced you that self – self-effort and self-sufficiency were better alternatives.
Faith is about admitting
When you look out in faith you are saying my trust is in something outside of myself – it is in God. Your life’s song is, “On Christ, the solid rock, I stand All other ground is sinking sand”. There is no Plan-B Christ is all you have and you are quick to admit that He is all you need.
1 John 4:15 (NIV) If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God.
Faith admits that Jesus is not just another prophet or just a historical figure, even though He was. Faith banks on the fact that He is the son of God and that through Him we have access to all of God’s promises.
Faith is an everyday kind of thing
Today you can please God – walk by faith.
The Holy Spirit is there to help you. Ask Him to continuously transform you so that you keep your eyes on Christ. It will be a daily battle against your will but you… are from God and have overcome… because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 1 John 4:4
Go walk by faith and take joy in pleasing your heavenly Father.
