What are you holding on to that is wearing you down and Jesus is telling you to let go?

Holding on when you need to let go

Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV) 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

The most common form of rest is sleeping. What do you have to do to sleep? Not much really. The biggest things you have to do is quit doing anything, lay down, close your eyes and fall asleep.

Rest acknowledges that you only have a finite amount of energy. Which reminds you that you are a finite human being.

But all too often we try to live as if we are infinite. We try to carry the weight of the world on our shoulders. We hold on to things that Jesus has said to let go of so He can carry them for you.

This has a lot to do with being meek. It’s admitting that you can’t do it all because you’re not God.

It’s coming to the realization that you need God.

 So let go.

Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV) Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

It’s when you bring you bring anything the makes you anxious before the Lord that you find the peace that your heart desires.

This is not to say that you simply quit trying and quit doing. Rather, it’s working with a trust that the results are not in your hands but God’s.

Proverbs 16:9 (ESV) The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.

Let go and hold on

You have to let go and hold on at the same time.

Let go of the burden and the need to control everything and hold on to God’s promises.

Remember that even when you’re not faithful or capable God is always faithful and capable.

That is where you will find true rest. In complete surrender to Jesus.
