Why do we feel like we have to come to God like we’ve got it all together?

Don’t be fake

Psalm 139:23-24 (NLV)

23 Look through me, O God, and know my heart. Try me and know my thoughts. 24 See if there is any sinful way in me and lead me in the way that lasts forever.

I love the Psalms because of their honesty.

The writers which include King David, the giant slayer, express thoughts that seem to come from desperate, scared and even depressed men.

The reason I think like this collection of writing so much is that this is the kind of relationship I want to have with God.

I would say the majority of people, often feel like I have to come to God like I’ve got it all together.

But I don’t and neither do you.

So why not come to God as openly as possible.

He sees everything anyways. He’s there with you everyone moment of every day. (Hebrews 13:5)

We come to God like we go into the world, with our fake selves suit on. You know the suit I’m talking about, the suit that says, I don’t have any problems, I don’t get depressed, sad, angry, anxious, jealous, or lazy. It’s all a cover-up.

It’s a cover-up because there’s no one perfect. (Romans 3:23)

Jesus didn’t come to die a vicious death on a cross for perfect people that have it all together. He came for sinners that have no hope apart from Him and are desperate for a savior.

Be true

So lay it all out before God. Empty all your “dirty laundry” before Him in prayer. Ask Him to open every secret door of your heart and clean house.

Don’t hold back.

Experience the freedom of transparency for your loving heavenly father that heart desires. He’s already forgiven you for it, why not confess it so He can start working to redeem it.

The amazing thing about coming clean and being vulnerable before God is that He doesn’t leave you there to feel ashamed but instead He covers you with grace and mercy.

He exchanges your fake suit for a suit of righteousness. (2 Corinthians 5:21)

Nobody wants to be vulnerable because of the fear and uncertainty it causes. But that’s what it takes.

Pray with David,  Look through me, O God, and know my heart. Try me and know my thoughts.  See if there is any sinful way in me and lead me in the way that lasts forever.
