You can’t have art without the artist
What comes to mind when you see something artistic or creative?
For me, I think of all the work that must have gone into making it. Or how talented that person is to come up with something like that.
I’m impressed with the art but more so with the creator of the art.
That design, painting, song, structure, sermon, movie, or photo came out someone mind. They crafted it in their minds and then put in the work to put it on display for all the world.
What you see is impressive because the creator is impressive.
Think about it.
You wouldn’t be hearing that beautiful song if someone hadn’t composed it. And you wouldn’t have been able to enjoy that movie if someone hadn’t envisioned it in their minds.
The ultimate artist
Why are we not more impressed with God?
I think it’s because we lose sight of the creator because of the creation.
The mind-blowing creativity that went into making all that we see should make us drop to our knees in wonder.
- What kind of artist could paint the sunrise and sunset with such a beautiful mix of colors?
- What kind of creative genius could make millions of species?
- What kind of imaginative being could place universes with such an order that everything doesn’t just crash and collide?
- What an infinitly wise designer could put together masses of fleshly matter and tissue to create something so extraordinary as the human race?
Can you mind wrap your brain around something so impressive? I can’t. My mind I not big enough to capture all of it. The smartest people in the world spend all their lives trying to figure out one of those things we marvel at.
Aristotle said it this way,
“The more you know, the more you know you don’t know.”
And that’s how we should live every day of our lives. Stunned by wonder in our creator.
Enjoying the art and the artist
Unfortunately, we don’t live this way.
We gaze at temporary things and created things and marvel at them. Our lives get spent on accumulating things that will one day rust and breakdown.
God has known this. He knows how our sinful heart and minds work so He has made a way – Jesus.
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me“(John 14:6).
God has done everything to point you back to Him.
There is nothing selfish about this. Why? Because there is nothing greater so He wants you to be consumed with the most glorious thing in existence. Not the created but the creator.
Just like the example I mentioned above, it would be silly to think that all of those works of art just happened by themselves. We know that’s crazy that why the creators get awards for making those things. We recognize that the is an artist behind the art.
And we must recognize that there is an ultimate artist behind all that we see.
The most loving thing He can do is not to make you or any other created thing the center of it all but to show you that there is no higher pursuit them God himself.
Jesus came to glorify the father by consuming His wrath towards your sin and thus showing you the glory of His love – “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
God’s glory was His ultimate purpose, but because of this amazing act you and I are brought near to God and can experience and enjoy His glory.
In Jesus we can experience and enjoy the art and the created but better than that we can know and be known by the artist and creator – God.
