1 Corinthians 3:16 (NASB)
Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
You have probably heard someone when asked where they are going, respond that they are going to church.
What they mean by this is that they are going to a building that is used as a central location for other Christians to gather to worship God.
While I don’t believe that there is anything necessarily wrong or sinful in saying this I think we should be cautious about that phrase.
Going to church
Church comes from the Greek word Ekklesia.
Ekklesia, however, means:
the whole body of Christians scattered throughout the earth
So by definition, the church is not a building, it’s a group of people who have made a decision by the power of the Holy Spirit to repent of their sins, accept the forgiveness of sin made available through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and surrendered to the lordship of God.
Not a building that we go to once or twice a week it’s an assembly of persons Jesus gave His life for.
I know this can seem petty or trivial, but based on my own experience and how I have seen people treat the church I think it’s necessary to think about how we think about and refer to the church.
The church matters and going to “church” matters because it is made up of people that Jesus gave His life for.
It’s about more than going to Church
So the risk is not what we say or the fact that we call a building a church. The danger is when those words reflect a belief we have.
The danger is when people really believe that the building they go to once or twice a week is the church and start treating it like that.
Their life reflects a person who believes that the building they go to is where they meet with God and once they step out of the front door God stays there.
The rest of the week God is in His house and we go on about our lives as if God is not with us.
So we need to change how we think about that.
Be the Church
We are God’s dwelling place.
Wherever we go God is with us.
Going to church should mean that we are gathering together with other people who have received the grace of God and have a desire to meet to celebrate His name.
When we come to Church we bring God with us and when we leave God goes with us.
So we don’t go to Church we gather as the church.
We are the Church.
